The Mouse That Roared

"Though the pen is mightier than the sword, the sword speaks louder and stronger at any given moment." - 'The Mouse That Roared', Leonard Wibberley

THE CHALLENGE
Your challenge is to make a map depicting a world where one nation managed to ultimately succeed over a significantly superior foe in war. This enemy nation need not necessarily be superior in terms of land, population or technology, but it should - on paper - have a significant advantage over the lesser nation in warfare.

The lesser nation need not be alone in fighting the superior foe, but it must have to hold out against the superior foe for much longer than thought possible or have a much greater effect on the war than thought possible.

The map may be set before the war - in order to show the circumstances leading up to it - or during the war or after it. Battle maps depicting decisive battles are allowed.

THE RESTRICTIONS
No ASB or future maps. You may go as far into the past as you wish, but the nations involved must be relatively recognisable as such.

This round shall finish on Sunday, 19th of September.

!THIS THREAD IS FOR POSTING OF ENTRIES ONLY!

Any discussion must take place in the discussion thread. If you post anything other than an entry to the contest here you will be disqualified from competing in this round of the contest.

Remember to vote on the previous round of MoF.

An updated version of a map I posted on the Map Thread a while back. A more strategically savvy Saddam Hussein manages to involve Israel in the Gulf War and bog down Coalition forces (which have decided under a more hawkish Bush Sr. to "finish the job" by driving at Baghdad). Eventually the war turns into a quagmire and an armistice is reached.

From An Alternate History of the Netherlands

During the Balkan Wars, Turkey had its own plans to attempt to reestablish the Ottoman Empire in the chaos. In 1953, the Turkish Army was vastly superior than the Greek Army, the first state to stand in its way and reconquest. At least on paper. The Turkish Army was poorly trained and equipped with some weapons predating World War II. They outnumbered the Greeks in every catagory, save armored vehicle. While the Turks were poorly trained (yet highly motivated), the Greeks were battle-hardened by the fighting in the Balkan Wars (1948-1989).

Turkey's first move was to take Constantinople. Thirteen divisions crossed the Bosphorus, sweeping through to the Black Sea, and cutting off the ancient city. Constantinople endured months of siege, before Operation: Golden Fleece launched an end run around Turkish forces (think Inchon) and cut the forces in Europe off from supplies. Additional Turkish attacks faultered, including the disasterous attempt to invade Rhodes. A good portion of the Turkish Navy was destroyed in the attempt. By 1955, when a cease-fire was agreed upon, the Greeks had swept through western Anatolia. Greek victory was largely due to superior leadership, including generals hired from overseas.

The Greco-Turkish War ended with the fall of the Turkish government and the cession of Western Anatolia to the Greek Republic. Over the course of the next decade, the Greek drove ethnic Turks from the newly gained lands, and populating it with ethnic Greek settlers. The next few years saw Greece expand into Macedonia as well as Cyprus.

Hopefully not to ASB the Baltic states build up massively in the 30s for unknown reasons. Estonia leads them and the USSR invades them and Finland at the same time. THey hold out and then counterattack. Meanwhile barbosa goes ahead but HItler makes the fateful error of attacking the Baltics and Russia. Stalingrad still Occurs but Estonia takes Leningrad. Meanwhile Germany gets bogged down trying to take Riga and Estonia pushes back the Germans while accepting an Uti possidetis with the Russians along with the Finns.
Estonia goes on to Annex the Baltics and East Prussia. They also set up a puppet Beloukraine to take away more land from Russia. DDAY occurs and Operation Valkyrie is successful and is even more large scale.
Peace talks are held. the new German Government hands over war criminals and frees the Jews and other members from the Concentration camps and accepts a Status Quo Ante Bellum with the West.
They also Cede East Prussia to Estonia. Both Germany and Estonia pull out of Poland

:D there you go probably this site's first Estonia Wank

The Vatican Empire

When the Nazis start to round up the italian jews pope Pius XII decides to make a stand and publicly challenges Hitler. This leads to period of strong persecution of the church.

Franco, enraged by this, declares war on Germany in late 1944 and occupies southern France.

The pope himself survives narrowly, when he is freed by renegade german soldiers in april 1945 shortly before his planned execution by the SS. Many people consider this a miracle.

After the war the curch, radicalised by the recent tribulations, is not willing to stand asside again and let secular politicans take over.

Catholic militas battle the communists for controll of Italy and win.
The new, much greater Vatican State and other conservative catholic regimes form the Holy League.
When the cold war begins the USA begin to support the church becaus of its fevernt anti-communism. The US allows a catholic takeover in Austria & Bavaria.
France joins the Holy League after de Gaulle comes to power and other nations follow.

The map depicts the global extend of the churches power after 50 years of fighting against fascism, communism, islamism and liberalism.

I should have used a smaller basemap. I appologize for the inconvinience.
