God's Frontier: The Northern Deseret Republic

1850s: The Mormons decide to push further west and are granted permission to settle in Alaska by the Russians, eventually buying the state from them. Originally called "Brigham Young's Folly", the Mormons have the last laugh when they discover gold and start taking advantage of Alaska's vast oil reserves.

What is Alaska like under a Mormon government? Perhaps like Utah, but with more snow, glaciers, and Inuit converts?

Personally, I'm Mormon, so this TL is both potentially hilarious and totally awesome. Will be following it.

As for why the Mormons would buy Alaska, perhaps they are slowly pushed westwards AND northwards by the U.S. government? I suppose you'd have to make them richer though, they were rather poor, and wouldn't have enough to buy Alaska in the first place.

Maybe they simply send a large amount of missionaries there, and the conversions convince the Russians that selling the province to the Mormons will be less trouble then the alternative.
