Berber Revolt

In 740, the Berbers of North Africa rebelled against Umayyad rule, defeating an Arab army in battle before being defeated at the Battle of Kairouan. So WI they won? Is it possible that a long lasting Berber state could have been formed in the Maghreb at this time, or would it have been quickly reconquered by the Caliphate?
