The Israeli Challenge

Of the timelines people put together, there is one common thread: almost all of them manage to stick a Jewish homeland somewhere or another.

Sometimes it's actually in the Levant. Sometimes it's somewhere historically suggested (Uganda, Madagascar, Alaska)...sometimes less so (Crimea, East Prussia).

The game: name a part of the world, and I (or someone else) can try to come up with a timeline to put it there that's no totally crazy.

The only rule (for now at least) is no holy cities or national capitals.

I always thought of the potential of relocating the Falkland Islanders to a state or territory carved out of Western Australia at the British Government's expense, or perhaps the Germans expense, and the establishment of a Jewish homeland in the Falklands, perhaps initially being a British dependency, but eventually independent.

What about the Russian Far East.

Suppose in 1939 Stalin becomes concerned with the Japanese threat to the sparsely populated Far East. After dividing Eastern Europe with the Germans, Stalin orders the deportation of all Jews in the new territories to resettle in the expanded Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Soviet Jews are also encouraged to go.

By Barbarossa 3 millions Jews have been relocated, and there they work in the new built armament factories to supply the Red Army. The mostly Polish and Baltic Jewish population also serve in the reserve forces, freeing up more Soviet units for the European front.

With the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian Far East declares independence after the 5 million Jewish voters who make up nearly half the population overwhelmingly supported independence.

The Madagascar plan was evolved instead of the Final Solution.
Ok there would be some problems to solve, like the occupation by the British of the isle.

This is a game we've played before, we call it "Pin the Zion on the Eurasia" (although technically other continents are fair game as well).

I've personally suggested Patagonia (where some lands were bought for that purpose in OTL) and Crimea (an idea later built upon in Thande's TL "Look to the West").

Whilst it may not be too difficult to find some land, how on earth do you get the Israelis to think of some other part of the world as their ancestral homeland ?

Northern Ireland. I think that you should put the Jews in Northern Ireland. I don't know if that would add to the religious problems there, or that an overwhelming Jewish influx would suffocate the conflict between the Protestants and Catholics.
Ideas?

:)

You can create any area on earth that you like. The fundamental point remains, how do you convince the Israelis ?

Very easily. Until the founding of the modern state of Israel, it was generally understood that the Jews would only get to return to Jerusalem once the Messiah had come and not before. Meaning that, if they were to be faithful to the most important prophecy in their religion, they could set up a country anywhere but in the Holy Land, as doing so would amount to usurping God's prerogative. Of course, that didn't bother the original Zionists, but that's because most of them were socialists and/or atheists, and cared little about Messianic millenarism.

So can we put the Jews in Northern Ireland?

:)

What, you want Northern Ireland to be plagued with endless tensions between two communities that will use religion as an excuse to throw bombs at each other?

I was hoping that the Jews would come to NI in such numbers that they would outnumber the other two religions and thus make the conflict seem null, void and pointless, but yeah, your way is good too................

:)

I thought the OP said no Holy Cities?

:)

Well we could perhaps look at what actually makes a collection of peoples both a city and holy.

Looking at the first word, it commonly means a large urban human settlement. The Vatican City has 861 people apparently, according to Wikipedia and the CIA Factbook. Most people wouldn't call this a city, so perhaps instead we could call it an autonomous or sovereign suburb.

So therefore it would be fine to settle the Holy Suburb of the Vatican with the collected diaspora. Perhaps this could see an exciting architectural technological advance as the collected intelligence and resources of the Hebrew people focus on the building of extremely tall and self sufficient buildings

Hendryk, look on the positive side! I predict Jewish Northern Ireland will soon see unprecedented cooperation between the Protestants and the Catholics!:)
