Fall out from "Schoolgate" continues as NPP & Conservatives Target seats at council election

The fall-out from the Lewisham "Schoolgate" affair continued today as both Conservatives and the NPP started to target Labour Councillors at next Thursdays Council Elections.

The Conservatives are confident of picking up at least four seats, and the NPP said today they could well now pick up six seats. This would Labour control of the Council in real dobut.

The main prize for the Conservatives would be the defeat of Concil leader Malcom Brown, who was the driving force behind the St Georges day ban. He had a majority of just 118 votes two years ago.

DNC Puts pressure on Senator Cody Riley & Governor Sean Boone over drugs arrest as youtube footage is posted on-line

DNC Chairman Josh Lyman was putting pressure on Alabama Senator Cody Riley tonight over his links to the arrests for possession of coccaion at a party in Washington DC on Saturday

His chief strategist Carl McPhee was arrested along with two others. A spokesman for Senator Riley said he had only been at the party for a weeks minutes before leaving, but tonight video pictures taken on a cell-phone have been posted on youtube showing Rilley and Washington Governor Boone, knocking back bottles of bud, and drinking shots of vodka.

DNC Chairman Josh Lyman said "We need to know what went on, the footage on youtube is clearly at odds with the statement from Senator Rilley's office".

Those are good! You should put them in the other thread.

Obama did want to be Mayor of Chicago one day, so there's that.

Riley makes statement over DC Party

Alabama Senator Cody Riley has made a statement this afternoon over his appearance at a party in DC last Saturday in which three senior Republican staffers where arrested for possession of drugs.

The Senators office had said that he had only been present at the party for a "short while" and didnt "drink" but footage appeared on youtube last night of him drinking bottles of bud and drinking vokda shots with Washington Governor Sean Boone.

"I can confirm I was prsent at the party on Saturday, I did have a few beers , but I did not see any illigeal use of drugs or any other illigeal behaviour. My office was mistaken in saying that I had not had a beer. I can confirm that and prove that I left the party three hours before the arrests. I am happy to prove this to any one that wishes to see it".

Haffley Questions Boone’s “Moral Fibre” Over Drug Reports

Former Speaker of the House and prospective candidate for Governor of Washington, Jeff Haffley attacked incumbent Governor Sean Boone today over reports of his attendance at a wild party in Washington DC last week.

The party held at the DC home of Boone strategist Carl McPhee has prompted questions about the involvement of both Boone and Alabama Senator Cody Riley and fresh allegations have surfaced about potential drug misuse – a claim dismissed out of hand by both men. This hasn’t stopped Haffley taking a shot.

This morning on Capitol Beat Haffley said “At the very least this calls into question Governor Boone’s judgement, at worse there appears to have been illegal activity – I’m sure the police investigation will clear everything up, but it’s important that Governor Boone be clear and transparent about exactly what happened and what his involvement was.”

The Boone camp who have remained largely tight lipped on the events said “Governor Boone was at a private party, he was unaware nor was he involved in, any illegal activities.”

Mitchell Endorses Cassidy

Outgoing Pennsylvania Senator Morgan Mitchell surprised many today by endorsing Carlin Cassidy in the race to secure the Republican nomination for the seat.

Mitchell appeared with Cassidy, who is emerging as a strong favourite in the race, as both took the opportunity to announce their support for each other in their upcoming races.

Mitchell said “I haven’t come across a more passionate and committed conservative in all my time in public life who can articulate a positive message for the future of Pennsylvania and for the United States.”

The move could well prove to be a final fatal blow to Congressman Travis Hoyt in his attempt to reverse the momentum that Cassidy has generated.

NEWKIRK STILL ALIVE?

Harvey P Stefano played a tape on his radio show this morning in which former CNN reporter Matt Newkirk who was killed mysteriously in Mexico in September, 2010 claims that he is still alive and in hiding. In the grainy 28 minute recording Newkirk claims that his family was being threatened with death unless he backed off his investigation into Penetrobe Engenering. Newkirk felt however that unless he faked his own death and went into hiding he would not be safe. Currently Newkirk says that he is in hiding in an undisclosed location. The tape is currently being analyzed and compared to real recordings of Newkirk to see if it is a fraud or not. Already prosecutors are gathering evidence to determine if this merits new charges against Penetrobe executive Gerald McCoy II and his cousin Roger Baker (R)-Michigan, the disgraced former congressman already serving five years in prison for corruption charges.

Lyman: Attacks on Thorn “Cynical and Politically Motivated”

DNC Chairman Josh Lyman has rallied behind New York Senator Andrew Thorn saying that the attacks on him were “manufactured” and that there is “absolutely no evidence that Thorn had acted inappropriately.”

Lyman’s comments came in the aftermath of a statement from fellow Senator Jay Cruger who claimed that Thorn should be more transparent about exactly what was going on with the investigation.

“Senator Cruger is attempting to manipulate the situation to give the appearance of improper behaviour – that’s cynical and clearly politically motivated.” Lyman said adding “We need to let this investigation play out in it’s own time but we need to be clear that at no time has anybody suggested that Senator Thorn has done anything wrong. Trial by political witch hunt is not becoming of this country/”

The investigation into Emerald and the wider Thorn group seems to be harming Senator Thorn far more than those close to him will be comfortable with, his approval rating has fallen below 50% for the first time and his little known challenger, Rob Cole is polling within six points.

Hoyt: We’re still fighting

Congressman Travis Hoyt refused to accept that his chances of winning the Republican nomination were all but dead yesterday telling supporters that “the only poll that matters is the one that voters will give us on Tuesday.”

Hoyt has seen a significant lead dwindle as former actor Carlin Cassidy has come from nowhere to establish a significant lead in the battle to replace outgoing Senator Morgan Mitchell who is running for Governor. Despite some polls giving Cassidy a double digit advantage Hoyt remains defiant “we’re still fighting, and we’ll keep making the comparison between a man with a significant record in public life and an actor who is a talented public speaker.”

Cassidy continued to campaign yesterday, appearing at a rally in Scranton and urging his supporters to stay focused on the election. “We need to keep getting our message of a positive conservative America out to voters.”

Final campaigning for local elections

Political parties are carrying out a last day of campaigning ahead of local elections in England, Scotland and Wales on Thursday.
Referendums on creating elected mayors will take place in 10 English cities.

Lib Dem leader Emma Dean said her party had a strong record at council level and a "well-deserved reputation" for getting things done.
Prime Minister Andrew Carter has urged his fellow Conservatives to be "proud" of their record in local government, adding that they run "the best-value councils in the country".
In 2008, the last time the seats up for grabs on Thursday were contested, the Conservatives gained 257 councillors across England and Wales, picking up 12 councils in the process.Labour lost 334 councillors and nine councils. The Liberal Democrats gained 33 councillors and one council.
The 25 seats on the London Assembly are also being contested.
Twelve candidates are running for mayor in Liverpool , eight in Norwich and ten in Salford.

In England, 128 councils are holding elections, with some or all of the seats up for grabs.

Profile on the Norwich Elected Mayoral Election

Today voters are going to the polls to elect Norwich's first directly elected Mayor.

If the polls are to be belived then it looks to be a straight fight between two of the eight candidates. The former TV and Radio broadcaster Alan Newman is running for the "East Anglian Devolution Party" and the former Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Francis Green, MP for Norwich North. Franics Green, left the Conservative front-bench after the election of Andrew Carter as leader in July 2010 and returned to the back-benchers. All the lastest polls show the two men in a virutal deadheat.
The result should be announced around 4 Friday morning, although if no candidate gets above 50% then thhe second prefence votes will come into play, which will delay the result until probably Friday afternoon.

Here is a full list of the candidates
  1. Alan Newman "East Anglian Devolution Party"
  2. Francis Green "Conservative Party"
  3. Gemma Robson "Labour Party"
  4. Susan Brown "Liberal Democrat"
  5. Kenneth Stringer "Greeen Party"
  6. Ronald Worthington "National Democratic Party"
  7. Peter Bond "National Peoples Party"
  8. Samuel O'Neill "Socialist Alliance"

Counting under way in local elections across the UK

Counting is under way across much of the UK in local elections seen as a crucial test of Andrew Carter's government.
More than 4,700 seats are up for grabs on 128 English councils, most of which were last contested in 2008.
Labour sources expect a "strong" night and gains in the south and Midlands.
Referendums on elected mayors are being held in 10 English cities. The BBC's Nick Robinson said he expected voters in many of them to reject the idea.
The first results in England and Wales - where all 21 unitary authorities are being fought - are expected shortly after midnight, with a full national picture of how the parties have done expected to emerge in the early hours.
Counting in Scotland - where every seat on 32 unitary authorities is also up for election - will not begin until later on Friday.
Liverpool, Norwich and Salford - where the local councils have already opted for the mayoral system - held their first mayoral elections on Thursday.
The results of the Liverpool and Norwich ballot's are expected about 0400 BST but counting in Salford doesn't start until later on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, Doncaster has held a vote to decide whether to abolish the town's directly elected mayor.
