Friday September 2nd 2011 Johnson & Moseley fight it out to contest Liverpool Riverside by-election After a rather dull TV debate last night, the news that two of the former members of the Green cabinet, Former Home Secretary Jonthan Moseley and Education & Skills Secretary Kate Johnson where the front-runners to fight the seat of Liverpool Riverside at the forthcoming by-election which is expected to be held on Thursday October 13th has electrified the Labour party. It was releaved last night that both Moseley and Johnson had been interviewed by the Local Party committee, along with an unkown 3rd candidate. Who ever wins the Labour leadership contest they would be under pressure to bring either Moseley or Johnson into the new Shadow Cabinet. Hey Mark,
As an American, I'm obviously ignorant of British politics (In fact, what is this strange land that you call Britain?), so could you please answer a question? Is it fairly common for politicians to move for by-elections in the UK, or accepted? Moseley was in Stevenage before deciding to go for Liverpool Riverside, and McGovern was in Manchester Gorton. While our world in-thread has a couple of US politicians who have moved, as far as I know there aren't any IRL. How accepted is this moving districts/constituencies in England? If someone loses a seat at a General election or they fight a seat and lose it as a candiadte they will travel around to get a new seat.
For example at the 1997 General election David Cameron fought the seat of Stafford (in the midlands) and lost but four years later won the seat of Witney which is in Oxfordshire. This story is based in part on both Micheal Portillo who famouslly lost his seat at Enfield Southgate but two years later returned at the Kenningston & Chelsea seat, and former Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind who last his seat at Edinburgh Pentlands at the 1997 election, re-fought and lost again in 2001 but returned to the House of Commons at the 2005 in the London seat of Kenn and Chelsea. As both Mosley and Johnson are big hitters and probably both of them would have run for the Labour leadership if they had not lost their seats in April,(If both Portillo and Refkind had held onto their seats in 97 they would run for the leadership and either of them almost certainly won) then the Party and probably themselves would want them to be back in the House as soon as possible. Hope this makes it clear. Last edited by Marky Bunny; September 3rd, 2011 at 12:33 PM.. |

The UK doesn't have residency requirements for a person to stand for seats in the House of Commons, so you can theoretically have never been to the area you are running to represent in parliament.

Maybe it is a U.S. thing, but don't the people who move just to run in that area get accused of carpetbagging? |

Carpetbagging is not something that goes at a National level, although the Liberal Dems espically will accuse people running for local council of it, if they are standing in one council ward but live in another (espically in Watford!!!)

Labor Day Protests as National Guard is called in, yet again Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 Jack Rubin, Head of the AFL-CIO, staged one of the largest union protests in history last April against Governor Brennan's attempt to curb federal employees collective bargaining rights. He has topped that with a similar display on Labor Day. The "Labor on Labor Day" protest brought almost 350,000 protestors to the Governor's doorstep, where National Guardsmen were waiting. The event had been planned for months and was less violent than in April, with no damage to the property recorded. Speeches were given by Rubin, former Michigan Governor Ruth Hutchins, Senator Paula Sacho, and Congresswoman Becky Reeseman, among others. A recall petition has been filed against Governor Brennan, stemming from corruption allegations related to both Android Defense Corp and the defunct Penetrobe. The petition is currently being challenged, and a hearing set for next week. The goal of the protestors is a February 2012 recall election, although rumor has it that Brennan may resign before then. Brennan has been noticeably silent as of late, cancelling an appearance at the Republican Governors' Association. Supporters of him, such as FBI Director Marcus Blakemore (a former Michigan Governor) and White House Press Secretary Bill Bradley, have been refusing to comment on the situation. The ban on federal Collective Bargaining rights failed last May in the Michigan Senate, although versions of the ban are still being promoted by Michigan Senate President pro tempore Karleen Goodall. A similar bill passed in Florida last June with little opposition, and will take effect in January. In Indiana, Governor Rudden pulled her support of an equivalent bill after the uproar in Michigan. ![]() President Arrested in Barfight Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 Former President Matt Santos was arrested, booked, and released last night after it was determined he was involved in an altercation at Houston's Anvil Bar & Refuge. According to reports, President Santos, his brother George "Jorge" Santos, and three guests, as well as President Santos' Secret Service detail, were enjoying a drink at the lounge when Jorge Santos became involved in a dispute with an unidentified patron. The unidentified patron assaulted Jorge Santos, at which point, two other men attempted to intervene. President Santos, attempting to stop the fight himself, was hit by one of the men, Paul Goodard, who was immediately hit by the former President before he was tackled and detained by Secret Service agents. A larger melee ensued, and Secret Service and Anvil security personnel detained seven transgressors by the time Houston police arrived. After reviewing security tapes and going over eyewitness reports, President Santos brought himself in for the misdeamor charge of disorderly contact. It was agreed that all seven men would be receiving the same charge. Paul Goodard is receiving medical care at the expense of President Santos for having dislocated his shoulder during the incident. The President's 50th birthday occurred on Sunday, which was a public affair, and the altercation took place after President Santos' private birthday celebrations Tuesday night. |
