British Texas ?

Is there any way after Texan independence in 1836 that Texas ould've become dominated by British influence ? Just remember back in Yr 11 American Hist over 10 yrs ago reading how there were some discussions for possible British control of the region, and there were of course a fair few young Englismen who went out to Texas to make their fortunes from the cattle industry.

Texan President Mirabeau Lamar, who didn't favor annexation to the United States, seeks out and obtains a loan from the British Government. The singular problem for Texas, as a independent nation, was that it was broke most of the time. Having Henry Clay was US President would help also, since he wouldn't have sought annexation, tho its likely that Austin and Washington would have just waited until favourable circumstances and administrations arrived and then tied the knot.

What if you delay the annexation of Texas procedure until after the US civil war (which will obviously be different) and then the Texans will realise they don't want to join a country which preaches states' rights but practices federal control? Sort of like Britain and the EU now: some of the elite would be for it, but the vast majority of the people would be against it.

Loans

I do remember hearing once in history class that Texas had loans with Britain and France and that the U.S. had pushed for annexation of TX to lessen their influence.
