Zeno Question

Suppose Zeno is toppled in 479 by Marcian, who rises up against Marcian or is he killed within the early days of his reign and the revolts come after that?

Well obviously, things wouldn't have suddenly stopped moving for a few centuries until math had evolved to the point where it could disprove Zeno's paradox. I'm going to say that was the biggest change. ;)

(I'm an unhelpful person and I feel awful)

In all seriousness from my incredibly limited knowledge of that era, it might have been incredibly destabilizing and with Goths on your back it certainly isn't a good thing for a fledgling Byzantine Empire.

Zeno's son, Leo or brother Longinus, would be the first two obviously people to rise up against Marcian as revenge for Zeno's death.

His wife would more then likely try and have her new husband Anastasius proclaimed Emperor.

So already there are 3 fractions who want the throne and there is no way of saying how many usurper from other Roman imperial families would revolt against Marcian.

Well, it wasn't a fledgling Empire really: the Roman state apparatus had been in place in Zeno's territory for about five hundred years by Zeno's time. In the fifth century, we're still undoubtedly dealing with a "late Roman" rather than a "Byzantine" state.

This will be the greatest thing that could happen to Odovacer, though he doesn't know it of course.

I doubt it would definitely have changed something in Italy, at least when it comes to Gothic invasion. It looks more as an inner conflict of the extended Thracian dynasty rather than a strong disagreement on foreign policy.

At this point, Goths (from Pannonia, Danube and Thracia) were already quite a pain for northern Roman regions, so giving them some motivation to go in Italy would probably be the logical choice for Zeno's successors. Admittedly, it could be delayed if they're enrolled to fight in an harsh succession war, and Theodoric Strabo would certainly have a far better deal ITTL (especially without Hunnic attacks), especially if he's related to the PoD (Thracian Goths comes earlier, and manages to help Marcian).

But, giving the facility both Theodoric had to agree when it came to general Gothic interests, they would represent a clear threat.

Either it means that Theodoric Strabo manages to hold a kingdom within Romania, either it means a more divided Gothic side in Italy with one of both Theodorics suddenly and mysteriously dying at some point.
