So, the basic of this thread is more or less a simple one.
It's going to be one part collaborative worldbuilding, establishing nations, governments and militaries on a counter-earth (named Hestia,) and then creating Armored Fighting Vehicles to live in this world, starting from the dawn of armored warfare in the year 900 of the Modern Calendar (900MC.)

It's descended in part from the Alternate History Armored Fighting Vehicles and Speculative Armored Fighting Vehicles threads in Non Political Chat, and the Alternate Weapons of War thread in Maps & Graphics.

Here are the basic maps of Hestia (Descended from Archangel Michael's AJND Ganymede maps):

And the Elevation map, which is on a 1km Scale in initially playable areas.
(Ie, the lightest color is 0-1000m, the middle color is 1001-2000m, and the darkest is >2001m)

I'm in, what do we do first?

Come up with a country, and write a little bit on it and then give me a rough size and location, and I'll fit it to the map.

Basically for now, just like a name, type of government, location, and a brief bit on the history.

Alright, I'll try to have something in a bit.

A general format for countries at first:

Code:
[noparse][B]Nation Name:[/B]
[B]Government Type:[/B]

[B]Population (900MC):[/B]

[B]Size and Location:[/B]
[B]Brief History:[/B][/noparse]

And as an example:

Name of the State: Izerian Republic (Izeria)
Government Type:Multi-party Semi-presidential Republic

Population (900MC): ~17,340,000
Size and Location: Large, occupying the central desert and lowlands south.
Brief Description and History:Izeria was until fairly recently a fairly minor, and ignorable state as far as such things go, mostly only serving as a barrier between major empires, and rarely playing much of a role on it's own. It was mostly known for the fact that it's population produced many fine silversmiths, and preferred to use coal stoves for everything instead of wood. With the dawn of industrialization in the west, and the subsequent insatiable demand for coal, things changed in Izeria, which now began to profit massively from exporting the vast bituminous deposits that were fairly common under the low desert. There have been some discoveries of oil along the Mediterranean Coast, but these are barely sufficient to meet domestic demand, and are only just commercially viable.

Thanks to it's mineral wealth, Izeria is for the first time a relatively minor power, but one with unique military needs, and the cash to finance such projects. Consequently, it regularly experiments with the motorization of it's military, and has a large fleet of armored trains to patrol the railroads in the central desert.

Nation Name: Eryxia

Government Type: Charismatic Dictatorship w/Aristocratic, Corporate Council

Population (900 MC): maybe 20 million, the State Bureaucracy isn't the best

Brief History: Originally a nice, peaceful tourist trap situated on the western peninsula, bordering the Monsoon Forest area north of it(or wherever you put it). Until, in the highlands, deposits of chromium, tungsten(wolfram?) and helium were discovered. The Landowners took the initiative, deposed the weak monarchy and installed a Great Leader to prevent the country from being overrun. Deals were made with other countries and now Eryxia sells to all(cash only or Neat Stuff). So far this has kept the Barbarians way over there...further.

Nation Name: Tanatic Empire (Tana)
Government Type: Constitutional Monarchy

Population (900MC): 23,470,000
Size and Location: Respectably sided state south of Izeria
Brief History: The Tanatic Empire is a rather old institution even in it's present form, and Tana has been ruled by the same dynasty for over 500 years. It has fought many wars with it's neighbors, and until the last century or so was usually victorious. Since then, well, things have gotten more iffy, and the popular revolutions of the 820s, and various nationalist revolts after that have driven the Crown to bring about reforms, even if they had failed to stop the losses of territory until very recently, when a combination of democratic reforms and increasing oil revenues finally made the populace content.

Currently, Izeria, Tana and their neighbors are in the midst of a number of disputes about oil exploration and fishing rights in their portions of the Mediterranean.

Nation Name: United islands of the Celedon sea (UC/Celedonia)
Government Type: Constitutional Monarchy

Population (900MC): 39,734,512 (899 new century census)
23
Size and Location: Islands in Eastern sea
Brief History: The UC is a large collection of Islands in the eastern sea, and is a constitutional monarchy with an Emperor as head of state and CIC of the Kings navy (as historically only islands with a king could afford a navy). The largest island is called Dibdio and contains the country's capital, Ghioc. The islands are host to a large number of native languages as well as religions, the most prominent language is Dibdian (as required to teach in schools). As a result of this it is common for foreigners to call the entirety of the UC, Dibdio. The Celedonians are immensly proud of their military, not least their navy, as it protects the trade routes that are the lifeblood of the nation. In recent years they have opened up to the tourist trade and made the important discovery of oil within their territory, which combined with their native quality goods mean that the next century may well be the Celedonian golden age, if they can protect themselves.

Nation Name: Vossland (ancient name: Vossmania)
Government Type: Military Dictatorship.
Population: 37,217,735
Location: Upper Northwestern edge of the continent.
Brief History: Originally ruled by a line Emperors but the Imperial dynasty came to an when the last Emperor died during the later half of the last century without bearing a male heir to the throne, the Emperor instead named his most successful general in wartime as his successor.
It is now tradition that when the Emperor rules for twenty years or dies while on the throne for the most successful or efficient general to ascend to the throne.

Vossland is rich with minerals and produces some of the finest steel which along with other metals is their main import.
Vossland is a very militaristic country with a strong army and a very professional navy.

Both of you can up your population numbers a lot.

Like Vossland should be in the 37 million range, and Celedonia should be comparable at least.

I'll do map updates daily, so expect a final version tonight.

OK I went back and changed my numbers according to your suggestion.

Nation Name: Great People's Revolutionary Democratic Republic of Calimar

Government Type: Revolutionary Council (Single Party State)

Population: 42,000,000 poor souls

Location and size: The subtropical dry forest/dry steppe region east of Izeria, on the east coast of the middle continent (where the inlet/bay is located)

Or just anywhere that is isolated or out of the way.

Brief History: Calimar began as a theocracy in the early 560s. It expanded over the course of 150 years, becoming a prosperous yet technologically backwards nation.

Things broke down in 786 when money ran out. Several "holy wars" hadn't gone as intended, leaving the army weakened and the treasury empty.

In the early 820s, revolutions gripped Calimar. A severely pissed off and overtaxed populace took hold of most of the country. During these times, many rebel held cities were burned to the ground, either by other rebel factions or the Loyalists. This was the killing blow to Calimarian prosperity.

Now, after 80 years and a half dozen more revolutions, Calimar is ruled by radicalists of a new, strange ideology that no one but them quite understands. They are isolated, militant, poor, backwards, and slightly mysterious, like the ancient kingdom of Korth Norea.

Nation Name: Weißenland/Weissenland (Latin: Albamentum)
Government Type: Confederation of parliamentary republics and monarchies

Population (900MC): 4 million
Size and Location: Somewhere north, with mostly arctic tundra, mountain forest and taiga
Brief History:

Founded as a confederation between several communes, Weißenland is a virtually landlocked, mountainous country in Hestia's storm. Following a strict policy of neutrality, the country jealously guards its independence against any invader, having turned its famed ridges into secluded fortresses to ward off any would-be attacker. However, with a meager population of just four million, its military planners could not expect to drive off any prolonged occupation, only inflate its costs to unsustainable levels. As such, diplomacy plays hand in hand with deterrence, boasting a robust financial sector to augment what little resources they have, as well as provide a safe haven for war funds from other countries without a question of its origins.

Though Weißenland was originally composed entirely of cantons with long standing traditions of republican government, its recent admission of a tiny principality at its border has caused considerable friction within the federal council. Unlike the cantons, its newest entrant, Amethyst, was an absolute monarchy, having just made the transition to constitutional democracy to comply with Weißenland's admission criteria. Its prince, however, still holds considerable power and respect among his people, and even within Weißenland itself. It was only due to the country's enduring economic ties with the confederation that had allowed it to join the union under exceptional circumstances. However, the death of the monarch in 898 MC and the crowning of an underage princess had raised considerable questions over the future of the principality within Weißenland. While democrats support a transition to a full republican canton after the end of the bloodline, radical nationalists, fearing a takeover from within, demand military intervention and an overthrow of the monarchy with immediate effect. And yet a third faction, the monarchists, had steadily emerged from the fore, arguing for an end to infighting within the council with imposition of the princess as Queen of Weißenland. But none has been said about foreign machination as of current, yet.

States:
  • Amethyst (German, French)
  • Apfelwein (German)
  • Birkehausen (German)
  • Buchenhof (German)
  • Chêne (French, German)
  • Ebenholz (German)
  • Feigenbünden (German, Italian, Romansh)
  • Fichtenberg (German)
  • Haselnuss (German)
  • Kienberg (German)
  • Paume (French)
  • Saule (French)
  • Ulmenwald (German)
  • Vite Viola (Italian)

OOC: Don't ask me why I have such poor creativity with names. Also, 'Buche' has too many unfortunate implications with suffixes. >_>

EDIT: Oh ya, might edit this to fit it into context.

Imperial flag of Vossland. The single star represents one state, one leader and the horse is there because of its contribution to the military, industry and transportation.
The ringed hammer is an old blacksmith symbol and represents Vossland's rich mineral deposits and fine steel works and has nothing to do with the Soviet Union or communism.
