Napoleonic Wars WI: Ottomans join the fray

So, what happens when the Ottoman Empire decided involve herself in the Napoleonic Wars? What if...

1. She joins the anti-French coalition?

2. She joins Napoleon?

How will this affect the history of Europe and/or the Middle East?

Before or after the Egyptian campaign, where then merely General Bonaparte attempted to relieve them of a province, squashing the Turkish soldiers there with contemptuous ease, cutting metropolitan Turkey off from most of it's imperial claims, and lunging north for Judea and Palestine, only stopped by amphibious counterattack by the Royal Navy? :p

They were long term enemies of two of the key elements of the anti- French coalitions, Austria and Russia; naturally they should have sided with Napoleon, but French revolutionary thinking was no more to their taste than Europe's, and after the Egyptian campaign there was too much bad blood, in addition to how impressively they had been thrashed.

No friends on either side, nothing to gain, and out of their league anyway without major army reform that they could not afford and hardly dare attempt in an age with revolution in the air.

So...back up a bit. How do you get things to play out differently so that they do get involved? The Egyptian campaign needs to not happen for a start, which considering how central it was to long term anti British planning, means major changes in French thinking.

How do the French get the Turkish on board as allies? Bribery, promises, threats, what? How this is done determines how well it will hold together, which will be important if there is going to be a joint Franco- Turkish attempt to march to and take India.

Hmm. This could be fun.

For which coalitions? There were several.

Join nappy? Fight nappy?

The answer is the same : collapse of the ottoman empire.

If they try to fight nappy... Well look at Egyptian campaign, look what happen and compare Egyptian campaign army with the grand army...

Join nappy? Well if Russia turn to them after nappy is defeated then none will bother to protect them...

The Ottoman Empire was already a major part of the Napoleonic Wars.

In a French alliance:
As part of the peace treaty with Russia in 1807, the Tsar was given a free hand against the Ottomans by Napoleon. Hence, they had no interest in helping Napoleon out after 1812, when he made several overtures to the Sublime Porte. They were exhausted by years of war with Russia and in no shape to attack either Russia or Austria. Napoleon the opportunist, never realised it pays to make & keep friends...

Against France:
After 1801, there isn't any border between France and the Ottomans. Which means any Ottoman army would have to cross allied territory and none of the other powers wanted that. The Ottoman army wasn't highly regarded so there wasn't any incentive to get the Ottomans aboard. Nor was there much reason for the Ottomans to fight the French. A strong France might have acted as a counterweight to Austrian and Russian ambitions.

It COULD be plausible for Napoleon to bribe the Turks to the French cause by offering to provide solutions for Turkey's MANY problems.

Army reforms: Napoleon could easily sway the Turks to reorganize their armies along the lines of the French army that had kicked the Turks' butts, remolding the Janissaries along the lines of the contemporary Imperial Guard (10 thousand 'Grognard' veterans, 20 thousand younger elites, 5 thousand artillerymen) and improving the quality of the regular foot soldiers.

Legal reforms: Napoleon has his law code- the Turks could easily copy and paste with his permission.

Government reforms: Advice from Napoleon would give the Turks a slimmer and more efficient bureaucracy, and may give the Sultan a role model to emulate (of course, French Kings and Emperors had a lot of mistresses, while the Sultan had a harem full of nearly-naked women...).

The Janissaries are too dangerous at this point. Might as well abolish them and establish a proper Imperial Guard, answerable only to the Sultan and with an unwavering loyalty to him.
