"Ho Chi Minh, leader of the Communist government of North Vietnam since it gained independence from France in 1954, has been assassinated in an apparent coup attempt by junior officers of the People's Army of North Vietnam..."
Now then, the questions I put to you are: 1)What could have brought this about? 2)What are the consequences of this assassinaton? |

When did this happen? What time? What government do the officers put in place?

He was President until 1969...so this assasination could've taken place anytime between 1955 and then.

Have one of two things happen in Febuary of 1968.
1 The Tet Offensive is even more of a military disaster for the NVA,or is not the political victory it was for Ho. 2 Have Walter Cronkite for what ever reason fail to make his statement about the War being lost to the US,this ties into the political victory Tet provided to Ho and would nullify Ho's gains from the offensive. |

As Ghost88 has surmised, the assassination is a consequence of the Tet Offensive being a catastrophic failure; as for the makeup of the new government, I'm not quite sure who would specifically be head of it but I imagine it would be predominantly constituted of officials who would try to arrange a cease-fire with Saigon at the earliest possible momemt.
