Castaways in Time - Adams
A multi-book series by Robert Adams (of Horseclans fame).
Does anyone know anything about this series? It looks to be about a group of people in a mansion in Spain transported to a world where Nestorian Christianity is dominant, and there is something about a Moorish Pope! I was going to buy the first book or two on Amazon, but are they worth buying? |

This is the same author who wrote the Horseclans series, so they may or may not be to your taste. I won't give it all away, but there are MANY twists and turns as the series(never finished) progresses, and Adams stands by his rather extreme attitude in that his characters must always be utterly good or utterly evil, not to mention his hysterical attitude that the US is going to hell in a handbasket in the 1970s.
Yes, this is the sort of fellow who mourns missing a third world war with Stalin. And his opinions towards homesexuals are best avoided if you lack a strong stomach. I remember another author noting that the opinions of the book's characters are not necessarily those of the author, but the same opinions do seem to recur with incredible regularity in this author's books. The world isn't Nestorian Christian but I won't give away how there could be a Pope Abdul. There is some amusement to be had, and it is pleasant that developing technology isn't nearly as simple in the book, not to mention what it takes to develop even moderate improvements in living, but overall I didn't want to encourage you and be accused of saddling you with something you didn't like once you had it.

I read the series a few years ago..... didn't really care for it. ALl things considered, the writing style is pretty ponderous, the plot just generally doesn't make much sense and goes wandering off to nowhere, and the characters are pretty tedious. The general idea was pretty much ripped off from H. Beam Piper's "Lord Kalvan" story. Generally a disappointment.
The thing that absolutely drove me mad was Adams' habit of having characters describe stuff in flashback monologues rather than depicting 'em straight up-- i.e. rather than have a battle scene, he'd have one of the characters babble on for a couple paragraphs about a battle that had happened at some point between the last time he'd used that POV character and the present. Pretty weak. By the way, I just found this website Hi, y'all! |
