Question WI: Edgar Allan Poe hadn't died in 1849?

In light of the new film "The Raven" I'd like to raise the question of what if Edgar Allan Poe had not died in 1849? I don't know of many stories that have used this POD but one which I have read named "No Spot of Ground" was very interesting and involved Poe becoming a Confederate General in the ACW. While Poe may have not reached such a position in real life if he had lived longer I wonder what other accomplishments he may have made before he died. I'm sure that he might have written many more influential stories and I believe he had the capacity to go into politics if he willed it. Since he was born in 1809 I also believe it was conceivable that he could have lived into the 1880s and thus have formed further opinions about the ACW, the industrial revolution, and world culture that could have changed some of society's view points.
