Should I buy Hearts of Iron II?
I just saw online that Hearts of Iron II is available for Mac OSX. I really like strategy games, but I'd like to know if it would be worth the money. It's only for 20 dollars, so if I don't like it, it won't be too much of a loss.
What I need to know: is it a very slow-paced game? I don't mind a slow game, just as long as the strategy is enough to keep me entertained. What's the replay value like? Can I play it over and over again without getting bored? Optionally: what degree of customization is available in the game? This doesn't have a very big impact on my enjoyment of a game, but I was just wondering. Because I wanted to build a Soviet battleship and name it the Lollipop. Yeah, I'm not normal.

Yes, do it do it now; Fairly slow; Lots of replay value; Probably; HUUUUUUUGE amounts. ...The default name for the second ship of the second German CV line in KMS Seelowe, BTW. Just saying. ![]()

Cool. I'll just get a few more opinions, and if I decide to get it, all I have to do is buy it- after my Birthday Self-Indulgence Grace Period is up, of course. I have a rule where I don't allow myself to buy anything for myself other than food for about a month before and after my birthday- unless I get money for said event as a present, in which case it's fair game. I try to be fair to all those fine people who get me prezzies. Especially since this one coming up is the big 18. However, I did bookmark the site that was selling the game, for future reference.

2. It can be as fast or slow paced as you like it. The game can be adjusted to go faster or slower, and pause when making crucial decisions. Long stretches of time when you're not at war requires little micromanagement and you can zoom by, but battles require intense micromanagement to get right. 3. As far as I can see, and if it's like any of the other Paradox games I've played, I could never get tired of it. 4. The names of individual units can be edited by simply clicking the name of the unit when you have it selected. You can customize (mod) nearly anything else using a few simple edits of text files. Using this you can add and edit events, nations, units, and stats, among other things. You can even change the map and locations of provinces, though I'm not 100% sure how this is done but know it involves some pretty heavy modding. |

It's realistic, in depth strategy game good for hundreds of hours.
And if you do finally get bored of the generic World War II, there's tons of mods out there to shake things up.

You could get it, or save up that birthday spending for the HOI3, which, IMHO, looks freaking amazing.

Well, I have a Mac, so I don't know how long it will take Paradox to release it for me. I can get HoI 2 for Mac for a relatively cheap price, so if I like it enough, I might get the third game once they release it.
