(1) The scenario of Hitler winning the Second World War seems to have
been used many times. Just how many scenarios of that type have come
out? One (according to a blurb in a newspaper; thankfully I haven't
read the text) describes the whole Holocaust apparatus transplanted to
England. The idea gives me the shivers, as I am English. One of my own
theories is that, every so often, this or that film studio draws the
short straw in the lottery that decides whose turn it is to disturb
the moths in the German uniform cupboard.

(2) Muhammad the Prophet gets killed in the Battle of Badr. Islam
does not spread. (Harry Turtledove did similar; in his story Muhammad
became Greek Orthodox Christian instead of starting a new religion.)

(3) Rome or Byzantium develops into an advanced technical civilization
in time for modern-type weapons to e.g. win the battle of Manzikert
and drive the incoming Turks back into central Asia. At the Battle of
the Yarmuk in Transjordan the Muslims invading from the desert are
summarily disposed of by fighter-bombers and Islam stopped, like an
invasion of Saudi Wahhabi Arabs was in the real world when they
invaded Transjordan from the desert between the world wars.

- But here beware of offending Muslim readers!!

(4) A stray fleet of European ships gets to central America at say
1100 AD and infects the Americas with all the usual epidemic European
diseases. These spread, causing the inevitable population crash, and
the survivors who gradually breed back to full numbers are now as
resistant as Europeans are to those diseases. As a result, white men
coming later do NOT cause a native population crash from white man's
diseases, and the American native languages and cultures survive in
much better strength and order than in the real world.

(5) In the first century AD the Jews decide not to rebel against the
Romans, and their Temple and the Yishuv survive.

(6) A biological difference. If Man could synthesize his own vitamin C
(like most animals can), if his kidneys could concentrate his urine
say twice as strong as sea water (like a camel's can), sailors could
sail much further and easier without suffering from scurvy and they
could safely drink sea water and would not suffer from water shortage.

(7) I have seen a mention of an AH scenario where AIDS and drugs
spread uncontrollably. The effect would not last indefinitely; the
survivors would breed to be resistant
