Authoritarian/Autocratic US

How can the US become an autocratic or authoritarian (take or pick or combine em) using any POD from any point in history but it still has to resemble the US, at least in theory.

thats pretty easy to achieve. In one ATL I Have for the future a second great depression in the late 2000's and a twilight war which trashes entire world. After the tiwlgiht war until the election of 2040 we see corrupt and incompetent leaders and in 2040 president Kessler's VP loses to a militaristic populist elected on promises of restoring america's greatness...

I think your best bet would be the 20th century. Great Depression is handled worse, results in fascist or communistic demagogue being elected President, or the Army takes reigns of government to avoid breakdown of order.

Borrowing from the Seven Days in May scenario, something happens where Cold War goes worse for the US....ultraright President is elected or ultraconservative military officers assume power.
