Warship Line Drawings

Mikey said:
I need a website that has excellent line drawings of battleships, carriers, cruisers, and other warships.

Enjoy. None of these sites are complete, but if you go to all of them, you get a good number of line drawings:

http://www.warship.get.net.pl/

A few in Russian:

http://warships.ru/

http://www.wunderwaffe.narod.ru/Magazine/MK/index.htm

http://www.wunderwaffe.narod.ru/WeaponBook/index.htm

Second link in Russian is a compilation of scans of a naval magazine. Click on each cover image, then go to the next-to-last link.

Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships

Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships is an excellent resource, although more expensive than the net. There is a line drawing for each ship, as well as good information on the specs and some history of the ship.
So far, I only have the 1906-1922 book, I'm going to remedy the lack of the others as soon as I can.
If your local library doesn't have it (not many will) then perhaps a different one will, and interlibrary loan can help.

Inter-library loan is a wonderful thing! If it's available to you, use it.

By the way, where do they get the screwy abreviations?
BB, CC, DD for battleship, cruiser, destroyer...I can see the first letter, but do they just double them?

Does this book, for AH purposes, have anything on some of the more wacky warship designs during the interwar period, such as the aircraft carrier HMS HABBAKUK which was to be built out of 'pykrete' (combination ice and cardboard IIRC, supposedly would've been as tough as bricks) ?

I thought heavy cruiser was CA, and light cruiser was CL? I'm not sure..

Also, that "pykrete" stuff sounds like something I would build a snow fort out of. Did it really work?

Again, where do you get CA from Heavy Cruiser.
And in short (read my link) the answer is "yes".

Again, where do you get CA from Heavy Cruiser.

CA used to mean armoured cruiser, if I'm not mistanken, as was later used for heavy cruisers.

Must admit that I find navy think regarding names etc etc quite baffling! ;)

Best regards!

- Bluenote.

An interesting site is "Furashitas Fleet" ot something similar, which includes lots of imaginaryWW2 ships created by combining real ones.

Check out a well-stocked Barnes and Nobles or the history/technology section of a decent university library. You'll probably see the following books:

Battleships and Battlecruisers 1905-1970 (Seigfried Breyer) - gobs of line drawings of all battleships, built or designed, in all their various prebuild designs and refits. The best source for all nations.

The US Battleship(?) (A Naval Institute Book - author I forget) Contains detailed design sketches of all battleships built, designed, and even contemplated by the USN - great what if possibilities.

The British Battleship (Oscar Parks) - Similar source for the Royal Navy - less focus on unbuilt design studies though.

The Imperial Japanese Navy (Author?) Good line drawings of every designed or built ship in the Japanese navy 1870-1945. Good photos and text too.

Also check out the Naval INstitute Press website for currently published books.

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869 - 1945 by Hansgeorg Jentschura, Dieter Jung and Peter Mickel. Very good book, I have it, lots of line drawings.

I tried to get this one some time ago. Amazon didn't have it, the book is out of print. I still am trying to get it(although it's not one of my priorities right now)
