Christopher Columbus Sails for Portugal

What if the Crown of Portugal would have funded Columbus, as he originally intended and he sailed for Portugal?

Not going to happen. Portugal KNEW that China was MUCH further away than Columbus claimed.

There's a reason he sailed for a nation that had no seafaring prowess.

The only way I see this happening is if another explorer discovers America before Columbus and Portugal wants a piece of the action.

Portugal knew the earth wasn't shaped like a pear. Anyways, I once read something suggesting that if he sailed form the Azores instead of the Canaries there wouldn't be the wind to send them back. Plus there was that apparently mutiny thwarted only when a storm convinced the crew there would be enough wind to send them back, so without that...
