All,
Was there ever a good time between 1700 and 1900 that "the Spains" might have broken up into their constituent parts?
There was some regionalism in the "War of Spanish Succession". Any chance that, at that point, or any time before 1900 that the Spains might have broken up?
Perhaps if Napoleon Bonaparte had played divide and conquer (rather than conquer), he might break up Spain into local Kingdoms. I'm not sure what the motivation would be as Spain wasn't considered a threat and it at least nominally kept Britain from taking over the Spanish empire.
Any other time that there was a bout of regionalism/nationalism capable of splitting up the country into Castile, Aragon, Andalucía, Catalonia, the Basque Country?
Anything practical?
What would be the likely result to the Spanish overseas Empire? Effective immediate independence?
Thanks.
